Work on the Wandsworth Roundabout by Rhinoceros is nearing completion, after a large repair and renovation project which started in July.
Featuring a massive eye-catching illuminated advertisement installation for outdoor advertising company JCDecaux.
The overall project is managed by the London Highways Alliance and includes major landscaping works inside the centre of the roundabout, which is about 12 feet below the road level. The project also includes extensive remedial works to the four pedestrian subway entrances and exits.
Rhinoceros have now nearly completed the subway work, which has included installation of a new drainage system around the entrances to the subway tunnels. These have previously been prone to blockage, resulting in flooding up to a depth of one metre. New drainage channels were cut into the concrete floor to a depth of half a metre, with new manholes, inlet covers and channel drainage.
Rhinoceros teams repaired concrete retaining walls within the subway tunnels and entrances, and repaired expansion joints and renewed joint sealant. The walls have now been painted in a bright multi-colour scheme.
Rhinoceros also installed tactile paving to alert partially sited people to the top and bottom of the subway stairs, new steel doors to electrical cabinets, and DDA-compliant double handrails along all the pedestrian ramps.
DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant stair nosings, finished with a black non slip surface and contrasting yellow strip to highlight the edge of the steps, are to be installed shortly and will complete the job.
