Rhinoceros teams working under contract from Ringway Jacobs on behalf of TfL are progressing a series of subway refurbishment works along the A10 Great Cambridge Road.
The subway walls have been failing to prevent water seepage, particularly in the retaining walls on stairways and access ramps. Original mosaic tiles had previously been overlaid with decorative tiles but there has been disbonding of the tiles, made worse by cold winter temperatures.
Different approaches and finished are currently being tried and assessed, while repair work to the walls is carried out.
An innovative panelling system is currently under assessment at the Turkey Street subway, incorporating an attractive and hardwearing iridescent surface which it is hoped will prove to be resistant to graffiti and damage. These ROCKPANEL panels BY ROCKWOOL feature ProtectPlus topcoat, a two-component polyurethane layer that also includes additives which makes it difficult for graffiti to achieve grip.
At Hoe Lane subway a more traditional repair operation is well advanced. Failed surfacings have been removed and re-concreting is well under way.
